Shopra vs Power BI

Shopra vs Power BI: the dashboard is the easy part

Power BI draws the charts. Someone still has to join VIP depletions, ERP shipments, and retail scan into one model first. Shopra arrives with that model built.

What is the difference between Shopra and Power BI?

Power BI is Microsoft's general-purpose business intelligence tool: it connects to data you have prepared and turns it into reports. Shopra is built for beverage: it collects shipments, distributor depletions, and retail scan, harmonizes them into one model, and surfaces what is driving and dragging performance. Power BI is a canvas. Shopra is the finished analysis for one industry.

Why is Power BI hard for beverage data?

The difficulty is not the charts. It is the data underneath them:

  • Every distributor sends VIP or Encompass files with its own item codes, which also change over time.
  • Pack sizes differ, so volume has to be converted to case equivalence before anything adds up.
  • Distributor files get resent, which double-counts volume unless duplicates are removed.
  • Shipments, depletions, and scan run on different calendars and product keys, with no shared ID.
  • Every fix lives in someone's model, so when that person leaves, the reports drift.

When is Power BI the right choice?

  • You have a data team with time to build and maintain the beverage data model.
  • You need highly custom reports or want to combine beverage data with finance, HR, or other company data.
  • Your company has standardized on Microsoft and wants every report in one place.

When is Shopra the right choice?

  • You do not have a data team, or it is buried in report requests.
  • Your weekly and monthly business reviews take days of pasting exports together.
  • You need to explain forecast misses: distribution, velocity, or promotions.
  • You want answers every morning instead of when the next report is finished.

Can you use Shopra with Power BI?

Yes. Many teams keep Power BI for company reporting. Shopra does the beverage-specific modeling and analysis, and exports to Power BI, Excel, and PDF. On the Enterprise plan, your data sits in a dedicated Google Cloud warehouse you own, which Power BI can query directly.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopra a replacement for Power BI?

For beverage sales reporting, often yes. For company-wide reporting across finance, HR, and operations, no. Most teams use Shopra for shipments, depletions, and scan, and keep Power BI for the rest.

How long does it take to build beverage reporting in Power BI?

It depends on your data team, but the model is the slow part: item mapping, case equivalence, duplicate files, and joining three data sources. Shopra starts the same day from uploads.

Can I export Shopra data to Power BI?

Yes. Reports export to Power BI, Excel, and PDF. On Enterprise, Power BI can connect directly to your dedicated warehouse.

Do I need a data team to use Shopra?

No. Data arrives cleaned and modeled. Anyone on the sales, planning, or finance team can use it from day one.

Integrations

Connect the sources you already run on.

Shipments, depletions, distributor inventory, and retail scan flow in through a mix of near real-time integrations and 24-hour SFTP exports and ingestion, including VIP and Encompass, plus API access and a fast agent backend for querying.

Your data stays yours. Enterprise plans can run on a dedicated Google Cloud warehouse you own.
